Background information.
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in New Orleans, LA. I now reside in Baton Rouge, LA.
What do you do? How did this “role” come about?
I hold many hats and I have to admit – I love each of them. During the day, I am a Dean at a middle school. In the afternoon, I put one of the hats I enjoy the most, that is a ministry as a minister and being an Administrative Assistant at my church. Working (both jobs) in a community that is often criticized and looked as a ‘rough area’ brings on its challenges but being a role model to the youth and young adults brings on much fulfillment. I am honored to have the opportunity to be a face of hope and to provide motivation.
Over the past 2 years, I have been building The KP Brand. This consist of a blog featuring spotlights, monthly social media chats and promotes thought-provoking topics for the everyday young leader, an apparel platform and soon consulting agency for faith-based organizations. The KP Brand’s overall mission is to promote good vibes.
What factors of your upbringing influenced your career goals?
Growing up in a family full of preachers, singers and community leaders has had a great influence on my life. I have always been interested in being a part of bringing a change for a group of people. I love people and to positively influence them is fulfilling.
How long have you been in this career? What did you do previously?
I have been in the education field for 4 years and ministry for 2 years. Before going into education and accepting my call to ministry, I previously pursued a career in real estate.
What long-term goals do you have? What steps are you currently taking in this direction?
About a year ago, I started writing down every idea and my goals in this notebook. I prioritize my list and tackle them. I would say that my top two goals are 1. To be full-time in my consulting agency and business ventures and 2. To start a mentoring initiative for young leaders. Creating outlets (in-person and online) and initiatives for today’s young people is at the top of my list as well.
Tell us about your social media presence. Do you use it in your line of work? Why or why not, is it important in your day-to-day responsibilities, platform or career?
My social media apps are next to my Bible app! Does that answer the question? Social networking has been a huge part of my jump starting my business and endeavors. I am grateful for the connections that I have made through the various platforms. With social media, I have been able to reach an audience that I would have not been able to reach as quickly. I believe that social platforms are important for today’s social entrepreneurs.
Which public figures, role models and or historical figure shaped your goals as a child and in adulthood? Any that embodies your personal values?
I am blessed to have a mother who tells me to ‘do it’! Watching her persevere through situations has been great motivation to me. Growing up, I had the privilege to have both of my great-grandparents in my life (now just my great-grandmother). Like parents, I am forever grateful for the MANY things that they have instilled in me. (I am thankful for those stories, that I pretend not to enjoy after the 14th time)
What does it mean to you to be a millennial? How do you share that with others in your life, those you meet and with your peers?
Being a millennial means that I can do whatever! I believe that we are a very unique group of individuals. I believe that when we set our minds to do something, WE WILL DO IT! We know how to push through. We are goal-oriented, quick, strong, passionate, proud leaders, relentless, and we are game-changers.
