Background Information

Where are you from? Dallas, TX

What do you do? How did this “role” come about? How and why are you best known by others?

I am an educational consultant and PhD student. Through my training, The FRESH Classroom, I equip teachers with the need to better serve students of color through the use of culturally relevant teaching. I started as a teacher in schools, then became a teacher leader, and eventually a Principal. This new-found role came about when I began to get inquiries about conducting on-campus training.

Did you attend college and/or have formal training in your respective field or industry?If so, please elaborate on the year you graduated and from what institution.

My major was in Psychology and I double minored in African American Studies and English. While this was not a major in education, I would say my studies gave me a unique perspective that informed my approach in the classroom.

What factors of your upbringing influenced your career goals? 

Attending a variety of schools from private to low-income, I wanted to be a change agent and advocate for students that may otherwise be left voiceless. When I attended schools with a majority of students of color in a low-income area, I noticed the lack of resources and expectations. When attending schools that were more diverse and more affluent, I came to understand early on the role of education in social reproduction.

How long have you been in this career? What did you do previously?

I have been in education for 9 years now. Prior to education, I worked in the treasury department of a payroll firm.
